Plymouth, Massachusetts: This is a place of history, culture and small-town American charm. The unincorporated town is located about 40 miles south of Boston along the Atlantic Coast in the southern portion of Plymouth County. As the site of the first English settlement in America, Plymouth has a history that is more complex than that of any other American community. The community is best known on its role in American history, as the stopping point of our forefathers, the Pilgrims. As such, the community has a very strong sense of culture and history. Several sites pay tribute to the 17th century Pilgrims who lived and struggled here, including Pilmouth Plantation, Plymouth Rock, Harlow Old Fort House Museum and Burial Hill. About 53,000 residents live in the town year-round, though the community is a very popular tourist destination. Local freshwater and saltwater beaches provide ample opportunity with various types of fishing and boating; several companies charter boats used in deep sea and sport fishing, whale watching and diving expeditions. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are available at the nearby Myles Standish Forest, a 16,000-acre site of wooded areas, ponds and trails. Other popular activities include parasailing, golfing, antique shopping and wine tasting. Three local vineyards provide tours and tasting of traditional and fruit wines. Public education in the community is provided by the local school district, which operates 14 schools throughout the town. The strongest economic sectors are tourism, fishing and cranberry packing.
